歌仔戲約在百餘年前發源於蘭陽平原，是唯一形成於臺灣本土的傳統戲曲。「本地歌仔」正是歌仔戲的前身，也是歌仔戲最原始的雛形，在臺灣表演藝術發展史上具有承先啟後的地位。所謂「本地歌仔」的「本地」意指宜蘭當地；「歌仔」則是「歌謠」之意。本地歌仔就是源自宜蘭當地的民間歌舞小戲。本地歌仔目前僅存歌仔戲的發源地宜蘭地區，形成之初祇有〈山伯英臺〉、〈陳三五娘〉、〈呂蒙正〉、〈什細記〉四大齣，且由業餘子弟所組成，當時農村青年在閒暇之餘，在廟埕、樹下表演自娛娛人，後來在廟會中跟隨遊行隊伍，載歌載舞邊走邊演，這種陣頭形式演出，稱為「歌仔陣」。因採「落地掃」形式演出且無戲服，也無水袖，並大量援用車鼓戲的曲調、動作以及妝扮，因此其表演形式與車鼓戲有許多相似之處。本地歌仔的表演雖然簡單、樸素，但卻代表歌仔戲最原始的演出形式，它形成於民間，代表庶民的音樂、舞蹈，呈現基層的常民藝術。由於本地歌仔保存臺灣唯一本土劇種的形式，且隨藝師凋零有瀕臨失傳的危機，文化部於102年指定宜蘭本地歌仔為重要傳統藝術，保存團體為壯三新涼樂團。
