陳澄波（1895-1947）為第一位入選日本帝展的台灣畫家，也是台灣近代美術發展先驅。陳澄波從台灣、日本、中國等地的旅居經驗中，累積了豐富的藝術創作體悟與能量。特別是1929年自東京美術學校西畫研究科畢業後，到達上海藝術專科學校、昌明藝術專科學校任教，開啟融合中國古風、尋求東方精神新體現的藝術探索，在陳澄波的繪畫歷程中，上海時期是其畫風變化的重要轉捩點，非常值得觀覽研究。財團法人陳澄波文化基金會大力協助這個展覽的進行，主要展品為陳澄波於上海任教時期的創作，內容包括人物、裸女、風景、友人所贈墨寶及相關文件資料，其中有多件首次公開的作品。此展另將輔以陳澄波留學日本時期及1930年代返台後若干作品，如本館典藏之「夏日街景」、「蘇州」及「新樓」等也將一同展出，期以學術性的角度，深入探討陳澄波在中國江南地區活動的藝術概貌，並藉此探索陳澄波創作發展的重要特色與畫風變化歷程。
