文字語言之外，圖像語言，應該是人類最有效的溝通工具之一。以「凝望之外／典藏對語」為題策劃之2012年典藏展，為展現典藏作品圖像語言、揭示藝術意義及時代文化象徵，特別安排作品與作品之間的「對望」關係。期望觀眾在賞覽一組組相互呼應的圖像過程中，藉由作品之間形式及內容的連結，以及展間與展間的議題對應，讓作品與作品、人與自己、人和歷史產生對語與共鳴。展出內容以人物／文字／符號／自然風土／花鳥植物等題材共分7個展間，特選本館典藏50餘件作品，展出作品年代橫跨自1920年至2009年，包括近年新進收藏作品，以及近年修復完成之作品。並為了紀念年初以百歲高齡仙逝的郭雪湖先生，特闢專區，將本館所收藏之郭雪湖作品全數展出，讓美術館珍貴的藝術資產共享於觀眾面前。

「隱藏的真實：典藏品修復展」是北美館首度展示1998年至今之重要典藏品修復回顧展，除了展出北美館歷年油畫、水墨（含膠彩）及紙質等修護作品之外，同時放映修復過程中珍貴的影像，形成一場「真實與隱藏」、「動與靜」之間的時空對話。透過歷年來修復過程中的意外發現，比如特殊的裝裱、材料、簽字、畫中畫，輔以X光、紅外線、紫外線、成份分析及可見光譜分析等科學檢測分析發現藝術家獨特的創作軌跡。展覽內容共分為「可見/不可見」、「科學/對話」「歷史記憶」、「藝術再現」四個展區、以及修復紀實影像放映，藉此分享本館歷年來典藏與修復之觀察與展望。
