從東方美術史的進展來看，當代水墨是現代水墨的延伸，將水墨視為一種承載藝術觀念的創作媒介，是二十世紀以來無可迴避的路徑，亦為必然趨勢。當代藝術的發展處於知識迅捷與科技變動的時代，藝術家以水墨表現其敏感的思維，既是以個人的生活經驗感受當下的現實狀態，而且在創作實踐的過程中尤須面臨嚴峻的挑戰；如何跨越傳統媒材的侷限性以及活用單一素材卻有無窮變化。然而，開放彰顯筆墨與時俱進且又能喚起歷久彌新的精神，啟開新的藝術想像和詮釋差異空間，似乎成為水墨藝術家孜孜不倦探索的視覺語言課題。「開顯與時變－創新水墨藝術展」，就策展的角度而言，以台灣的“現代水墨”與大陸的“實驗水墨”作為探討主軸，交互對照水墨自覺衍生的圖象語言。本展策劃的論述與詮釋面向包括：筆墨異形與精神之拓展與變奏、當代水墨藝術的空間意識、以水墨書寫構成有機符號、以水墨詮釋當代文明變遷軌跡、解構書法線條轉化水墨構成語言、水墨觀念‧裝置‧行為之形式內容。本展計展出二十七位藝術家的獨特面貌與時代躍動的水墨作品。無論是現代或是實驗水墨藝術家，他們不僅以水墨語言觸動時代之敏感性，而且懷抱理想，具體呈現更多元豐富的藝術內涵與價值。

「2012台北雙年展」由目前以德國柏林為主要據點的德籍策展人安森．法蘭克（Anselm Franke）負責策劃。本屆展期：2012年9月29日至2013年1月13日，除主要展場臺北市立美術館外，並延伸到臺北市內其他地點。 「2012台北雙年展」的策展構想是和過去與歷史進行想像性的互動，進而協調歷史意識。假設全球藝術體系的共同點就是現代化的經驗和影響，本屆雙年展著重的便是全球各地藝術家針對這種經驗與過程如何闡述與進行談判協商。重現或重顯現代性，重新書寫其主要的敘述，以及，重新擬定建構的資源，這些都是具全球性規模的跨學科計畫。這項展演活動的驅使力在於希望能找到一個優勢位置發聲，並由此連結到現代化的邊緣，其目前的形態與漫長的身影與影響，以及藝術在當下轉型過程中扮演的角色。 王德威在其中國文學研究的書籍《歷史與怪獸》中提到了中國與台灣在20世紀的歷史，並談及許多的政治暴力──通常以啟蒙、理性、烏托邦為名──與虛構產物間的關聯。王德威在書中透過中國古代的惡獸檮杌來表現歷史，因為檮杌可以看見過去與未來。當歷史無法將過去的意義帶到現在時，虛構的文字就取而代之。本屆雙年展召喚檮杌，這隻虛構的怪獸是個對象，代表了人類對過去經驗的詮釋與無法追憶卻又無法忘記的官方記憶（official memory）。正是透過歷史如怪獸般的醜惡與殘暴所內含的政治與美學意義，才能在所展現的可能曙光中想像現在的狀態。 透過東南亞地區與世界各地共同策展人的合作，「2012台北雙年展」的架構下有一系列想像的微型美術館，投射出推測的歷史與未來的可能性。
