Tasmanian Native Hens, recorded at Leith, Tasmania, 29 March 2016. Two adults were protesting at me being near their four chicks while I was recording the adult's calls in our front yard. I didnât see the chicks, and I only had a vague idea of where they were â somewhere under dense shrubs.This recording is a montage of 10 recordings made over a 30-minute interval. I recorded in three ways on a Marantz PMD 661, slowly approaching whichever adult was nearest me. When I was within about 10 metres they'd move away.1. Using a Rode NTG1, handheld2. Using the internal mics of the Marantz, handheld3. Using the internal mics with the Marantz on a tripod, and hoping the adults came close (which one did in a loud blast near the end) while I walked around the yard.Traffic noise is evident in the background (we live near a major highway), and sometimes my footsteps are audible.The hens make several types of sound:1. Single clicks. A transient click which the chicks will instantly respond to by moving into hiding if they are not already hidden. Sounds like stepping on a stick, but all clicks in this recording were made by the hens. (0.06, 0.14, 0.16, 1.10)2. Staccato clicks. (0.09, 0.37, 0.40, 0.50, 0.52-1.00)3. Staccato honking calls. Similar to the staccato clicks, but the individual sounds are honks. (0.15, 0.17, 1.03, 1.08)4. Screeches, both soft and strident. (soft: 1.25,1.31, 1.35, 1.41, 1.43; strident: 2.07-2.16)5. Duet between two adults over the road beside the river (0.20-0.35)The strident screeches probably meant the adults were getting upset. I stopped recording after hearing those. I must have inadvertently gone very close to where the chicks were hiding.
