The literary demon Mephisto, as depicted in the now destroyed bas relief mural in St Petersburg. The bas relief of the smirking demon was built as an adornment for a modernist guest house completed in 1914, and had become a city landmark. On Wednesday 26th of August 2015, a group of workmen, who refused to identify themselves, drove up to the sculpture, knocked it down, smashed it to pieces, and carted the fragments off to a dump. The statue cannot be restored. Вчера неизвестные сбили лепную фигуру демона с широко раскинутыми крыльями с фасада дома Лишневского, расположенного в Петербурге на Лахтинской улице, 24. Дом является памятником модерна и находится под государственной охраной как выявленный объект культурного наследия. Особую остроту истории придаёт тот факт, что напротив здания уже шесть лет идёт строительство храма Cвятой Ксении Петербургской.
