This is a 'Daruma Doll'. It's kind of a Japanese good luck charm. I suppose it's a traditional toy, but not really played with these days I guess. Often they are sold without their eyes drawn (I drew the eyes) and the buyer fills in one eye and makes a wish. When the wish comes true the buyer fills in the other eye. My own personal 'daruma doll' with one eye filled in, is somewhere in my current abode. I couldn't be bothered to find it so this image of mine is based on a public domain photo uploaded to Wikimedia by user Sat666.
