This old man, who I guess is symbolic for Father Time, is reading from a big book. In front is what could be a skull, and beside him is an hourglass. Originally this was an anti-World War 1 political cartoon, but in order to make it more universal the text commentary on his book has been muted so it could mean anything for anyone.
