「南管」流傳在大陸泉州地區，以及隨著閩南移民前往的台灣、東南亞等地。南管音樂的特質，因固有的傳承制度，而使音樂的詮釋展演具有高度藝術性。南管音樂採用坐姿奏唱，且都有固定的座次，以琵琶為領奏，率先捻指起音，隨後簫聲加入，三絃、二絃亦自然溶入幫襯。從歌樂的角度看，南管以本嗓演唱，偏重在較高音域的聲腔表現，非常注重字音與音樂旋律的關係，尤其對發音、咬字、收聲的講究，及撩拍起落輕重的拿捏，充分保存中國傳統雅化系統的歌唱風格，而對泉州方言淋漓盡致的美化詮釋，更使得南管兼具民間俗曲歌謠的地域特性。惟南管音樂的古樸、典雅及高度藝術特性，在當前諸多館閣中，已有逐漸失傳之虞
